was not going to step down from the presidential podium into that courtroom and become a prosecutor. mitt romney was happy to take on the role of the smiling prosecutor, which i think we can all agree was exactly what he should have done. tactically what we saw mitt romney do makes sense from where we're sitting certainly, and when you are sitting where we're sitting, watching what the president was doing in the debate, being careful, protecting his lead, you might say, you can look at that and say that's not going to work in the next two debates. and i think team obama is probably looking at that right now and saying okay, we have to step into this debate. we can't stand back and i would differ with you, rachel about the moderator point in this debate. i actually like this kind of debate because the moderator is not a factor. he leaves it up to the debaters to make it a debate. mitt romney's team knew that and mitt romney came into this debate determined to make it a debate. no one brought up green jobs. the moderator didn't bring up green jobs. mitt romney did to use it as a tool against the p

mitt romney is down in the race but he's still got a chance. only down 3 points nationally in the journal/nbc poll. in key swing points he's pulling even in florida, down 1, closer in virginia, down 2, he's still down by 8 percentage points in our poll in the state of ohio, which is a problem for this reason. look at the map of swing states. if you look at the ones where mitt romney is running within 4 points of president obama, places like florida, virginia, iowa, missouri where he's ahead, north carolina where he's even or ahead, you add all those to the solid states for mitt montana and the leaning states for mitt romney, he's still only at 263 electorate votes. he needs to bring ohio or other swe swing state, nevada, new hampshire. he's got an unparallel opportunity tonight to come on stage with the president of the united states and make his case, larry. >> john, the wall street journal poll and others have shown that romney has closed the gap a little pit with president obama at least nationwide and some of the swing states. to what do you attribute this closi closing

doing better is supposed to trickle down to non rich people somehow. that is the core of mr. romney's economic ideology and economic plan. so i think they have coined this other competing trickle down term so the insult of trickle-down economics starts to just sound confusing and meaningless. trickle-down government, trickle-down economics, both sides are saying this, i don't really know what it means, it's just political noise. mr. romney trying to rob that phrase of its power by using the phrase itself in new nonsense ways. right? we know one way mr. romney may be trying to neutralize expected attacks on his economic ideas could be to rob his opponent's words of any meaning, right? now we also know after last night's debate is the other thing he's doing is just saying the economic plan he has been stumping for all year long is not his plan at all. mr. romney worked both those strategies last night and mr. romney, of course, won the debate, on style, on presentation, he won on demeanor. now day two is the attempted cleanup for things he actually said. today has been a day of mr. ro
